MOUNTAIN LAKES
Not far from Almaty, you’ll find a number of stunning alpine lakes: Big Almaty Lake, Lake Issyk, the trio of Kolsai Lakes, and the mystical Lake Kaindy with its submerged forest.
Big Almaty Lake
Located 15 kilometers from the city
Dear tourists
Please note that the road to Big Almaty Lake is currently closed due to reconstruction work.
While vehicle access is temporarily unavailable, hiking enthusiasts can still reach the lake on foot. The hike to the lake takes approximately 2 hours one way.
Issyk Lake
Located 80 kilometers from the city
The beauty of Lake Issyk largely depends on the color of the water, which changes depending on the temperature. The water can be either turquoise or swamp green.
Kolsai Lakes
Located 300 kilometers from the city
Kolsai Lakes are a chain of three alpine lakes located one above the other in the mountains, along with Lake Kaindy, which is situated nearby. Most visitors explore Lower Kolsai Lake and Lake Kaindy, as they are the most accessible and scenic.
Since the Charyn Canyon lies in the same direction, it’s a good idea to combine your visit to the lakes with a trip to the canyon. Many tour companies in Almaty offer one-day combo tours to Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes. However, if you have more time, we highly recommend booking a two-day tour with an overnight stay in the village of Saty, which is located near the lakes, where you’ll find plenty of cozy guesthouses.
Staying overnight allows you to explore the area at a relaxed pace and truly enjoy the natural beauty without feeling rushed.
